a12 / a13 matchmaking

[pier4r]

The matchmaking is not really "broken" but it doesn't work as expected, according to the discussion made in the past and today in discord. I will try to expose it via checks (thanks to the players that played a lot)

but the filtering will not exclude the first player you met once it's been X mn since you played her
let's say
you play P1 at t=0(edited)
you request a new match at t=1mn, the mm will exclude P1 because it's been less than 30 mn since you played her
t=2mn same
...
t=30+ -> not excluded anymore
if she is still the "best" match, she'll be picked

as sorting goes pending > closest league > diff IP > less recently met > closest score > latest deployed
( unranked = pending > closest XP level > diff IP > less recently met > latest deployed )

Hmm based on what you wrote I would expect this. Let's say that there are a list of oppoents o1 to o40.

After 30 minutes I play until o15.
Then I would expect that the matchmaking would consider o1 again but not as best fit
Why? Because I played o1 30 minutes ago while I did not yet play o16.
I'd say that after checking the score range and the pending matches , the list of ghosts should be ordered by "oldest ghost matched ". If I never matched someone I will pick him. If i matched everyone at least once I pick first the ghost I met long ago
In this way is ensured I go through all the possible opponents
And variety is happy (although some.have 3 ghosts or more)
Was I clear? With the touchscreen it is a pain

actually if you compare ghosts from the same league, it should already work like this

Now the following lists may have ghosts that fall out of range, but still some ghosts are not enough represented or they are not picked at all.

So this to show that the matchmaking is still biased. I think the procedure as described by GFX is pretty fine, I think it works great. But somehow the code seems bugged.
If GFX can post the code snippet about the matchmaking, maybe we can brainstorm a solution.

Additional bug. When the sollniss ghost is picked, the wrong one is picked. (it is not related to sollniss only, but likely to the matchmaking procedure)

I edited the message multiple times because the first versions are always unreadable. I first write for myself, then I fix it a bit for the others :shy:

So I did another investigation (based mostly on the stats page, as for the procedure I cannot debug it without data).

It seems that after your fix (about considering the actual league of the ghost) the majority of the matches are interleague. That is, picking a ghost outside the league is very difficult because there are enough ghost in a league normally.

If the ghosts population stays high (like 20+ per league, in this moment in grandmaster there are at least 45 different ghost names) that's all fine. The interleague ghosts ensure that players get like 50% winning rate (unless players are not strong enough and they get demoted) and that helps the fun.

What I observed is that with ghosts all the sort steps actually in place to find an opponent are unneeded. In active vs active deployments checking IPs, closest elo, time from last match and so on it is still ok, although active vs active deployments are rare. (Active vs active deployments are a thing that likely won't happen often until the playerbase grows again at the level of spring 2017)

Since most of the time (say, 98% ?) matches are "active vs inactive deployment" I would simplify the procedure like this:

- pick all the eligible ghosts in range (+/- 400 points) (in the case the "same league filter" can be kept, if there are enough ghosts in the same league though)
- sort them by last encounter with the active player.
- pick the ghost that was encounter the less recently.

That's it. So whoever is playing will cycle through all the eligible opponents even if playing in different sessions. So if there are 10 eligible opponents and I play 5 times today and 5 times tomorrow and my score stays quite stable, I will play the first 5 opponents today and the last 5 tomorrow, the day after tomorrow I'll start again with the first 5.

In this way the possibility to keep possible bugs low should be feasible. Moreover the "different Ip", "closest elo", etc... doesn't really apply with ghosts. It is more interesting to go through all of them, if they are not hundreds.

Say that against each ghost one wants to know if it is mostly winning or not, counting results for a sort of "best of 5". this means a minimum of 3 matches against each ghost. If in one league there are like 20 ghosts within range, this means 60 games to have 3 matches against each ghost. If there are more ghosts (like now, 40), it is practically a lot of variety.

Of course this doesn't apply if a player score is very distant from the others (for example a player at 2700 and the rest is 2300/2200). Anyway once again miojo (good bot) is picking milkhunter (actual #2) and sollniss (one of the strongest ghosts at the moment) rarely. With a simple loop (based on the time from the last encounter) through the eligible ghosts it is ensured that good bot will pick also sollniss and milkhunter.

One can say "and what about ghosts that were never met before?". Well for those ghosts one can set a default "last met" in the past, like met "on the 1st jan 1970", and then pick the first on the list. Where the "first" is decided by the database engine. It doesn't really matter.

I am a fan of "closest score" pairings, but again those are unneeded when one can go through the entire set of opponents. Otherwise at first the closest score pairings will be interesting but then the lack of variety will kill (a little) the fun.

Closest score pairings are surely good for active vs active deployments, as both players deploy something new. For active vs inactive I don't think it is needed, unless the amount of opponents is too big. Say 200+ ghosts or the like. But even in this case one could limit the amount of ghosts retrieved as eligible players, saying "the first 200 with the score closest to the actual player" and that clause should be enough a substitution for "closest score" pairings.

I picked only the right column, the one with inactive deployments (almost always at least).

I cleaned up a couple of mentions of inactive deployments in lower leagues (that is, the ghost was under 1740).

Now one can notice that the deployments are around 20 for all ghosts. Those under 20 normally are at the bottom of the score range in grandmaster, so they don't get picked much by those active players having 2150+ score points. Or those that have a really good ghost but to pick it one has to have a big score (see kogataru) otherwise the next ghost is in the master league and it is unlikely to be picked.

One can see that sollniss is the only ghosts not bordering 1800 that gets picked quite a little. Milkhunter similarly doesn't get picked as much as the other ghosts that are over 2000.

Aside from those I notice suspense, that has the ghost at 1800 but likely as another around 2000 that doesn't get picked at all. Aside from those 3 ghosts (two picked not that much, the third maybe not picked at all), all seems fine.

OK I just found what was going wrong.
Sollniss has pending matches (active deployments) with old resolution engine versions.
The player listing contains the latest one but it gets filtered out immediately because you can't join an active deployment using a different resolution engine version.
Anyway, fixed it.

Quick question. I see that players in the 1900/2000 range pick a good bot ghost that is around 2100. Is there any good bot ghost that is under 2300 ? It seems peculiar that none is available

it seems like that the only available "most recently updated" good bot ghost under 2300 - 2300 is the limit for those having 1900 points - is the one with 2100. It seems quite peculiar to me, especially after your report above.

It seems that all the 80 ghosts over 2100 and the 104 over 2200 and the 219 over 2300 are all older than this 2100 ghost. Thing that sounds strange since for a while good bot was 2050 something, then started to climb first to 2200 and then over.

It still only takes the latest ghost for each player into account.

The funny part is that one can farm a ghost of a player, sucking hundreds of points and then the player can suck those points back. It is like inflation all the way down in those cases. (this unless a ghost is sucking them, then it is ok)
But whatever, the score differences are still telling the truth.

I don't feel good about all these buggy/temporary deployments, that give other players free points and then get updated to hi score again after each single match of real player to give even more points to players.

My suggestion still to make ghosts only from deployments, which won their match.

It is a filter yes. Although it doesn't strictly mean that are not buggy deployments. And once again the free points are yes, free points, but after a while they get redistributed.

That is. It is true that the highest ghost is 2700, but it is also true that old ghosts that were 1850/1900 are now 1950/2000 so they are capturing back points. It takes a bit of course.

The problem is to see the scores in the long run, and not as "absolute skill value of today".
