How do you zoom?

I am playing on my laptop without an external mouse and I can't find a way to zoom.

I haven't paid for the game on PC so I'm just guessing, but don't you just do a two-finger scroll on your touchpad to simulate a mouse wheel, like you would scrolling a web page?

I have to pan the camera (drag the viewscreen around in the arena) to loosen the grip of auto-zoom before zooming actually works.
