Unavoidable tournaments! Meta

To discuss ideas for the unavoidable tournaments and fun facts.

############################
Existing tournaments:

Given that the in game score, using a variant of the elo formula, convey more or less the information "this player was that strong in the recent matches against the active playerbase" . The following tournaments convey some more information.

  • Unavoidable tournaments direct fights (df) . Players that score high in this tournament are players that "scored well against other players during the considered period of time that, according to the in game score, were quite strong against the active playerbase".
  • Unavoidable tournaments xp gains (xp) . Players that score high in this tournament are players that "Played a lot and won the majority of the games played in the considered period of time".
  • Unavoidable tournaments average score (as). Players that score high in this tournament are players that "Played a lot and were consistently stronger than the active playerbase according to the score in game for the duration of the period considered".
  • Unavoidable tournaments streaks (s). Players that score high in this tournament are players that "Played a lot and were consistently stronger than the active opponents at least for some moments, to win many of them consecutively and raising their own in game score".

############################
Cross tournament hall of fame:

Players winning all the existing tournaments at least once
(ordered by minimum wins, if minimum is equal, then total wins)
- Ritter Runkel (3 df, 2 xp, 2 as, 2 s)
- nullpointer (2 df, 1xp, 6 as, 5 s)
- wozza (1 df, 1 xp, 6 as, 6 s)

Players most present in the top3 of all tournaments
(ordered by minimum value in a tournament, if minimum is equal, then total)
- ritter runkel (7 df, 7 xp, 10 as, 12 s)
- mcompany (7 df, 11 xp, 6 as, 10 s)
- mgblitz (3 df, 8 xp, 3 as, 7 s)
- nullpointer (4 df, 2 xp, 6 as, 7 s)
- pier4r nvidia k1 (2 df, 2xp, 9 as, 4 s)
- wozza (2 df, 1 xp, 7 as, 7 s)
- kheops (3 df, 2 xp, 1 as, 3 s)
- black phantom (1 df, 3 xp, 1 as, 1 s)

So I have the following ideas for additional tournaments, what do you think about those?

- implemented - longest streak without losses in a week with at least X games played.
Rationale: who wins the most, is better than the opponents that he encounters. If the player has a low score the player will climb, if the player has an high score, the player would widen the gap against the other until the player gets 0 points from a match. In this way players that play and are pretty much invincible against the opponents will be rewarded

- implemented - longest streak without losses in a week from players with lower score with at least X games played.
Rationale: as the idea before, but in this case one does not penalises so much players that are climbing and that, for the moment, are better than all the players below them but still have to work out things for players above them.

- Implemented - Highest average elo (median would be better but it takes effort) kept in the week with at least X games played.
Rationale: to reward players that are able to stabilize around high scores even if the play not a little.

- From Kanishka: longest streak of wins divided by map with at least X games. But I'm not really sure if he means this so I invite him to explain a bit more the idea. See further posts below.

- discarded - Direct fights modification. Count points against a player counting the valid results on single maps (bo3 for each map). So at the end a player wins another if he wins most of the bo3 against him. In this way one has still to be pretty active, but fights between two players generate a normalized amount of points and not that two players generate 24 points (8 * 3) and two other 6 (2 * 3) because the first two played a lot together and the second two not. Hmm, in this way, aynway, a good player may exploit this winning few matches against many other players and then stop playing. Instead if every map counts, someone playing a little with high efficiency is not enough to win. Since the point is playing and winning, maybe the current format is better to avoid early "look I have enough points".

- implemented - direct fights modification: consider amatch valid already with 2 matches instead of 3? In this way whom plays a lot is still advantaged but a little less.

- implemented - avg score modification. While it is nice to know the avrage score, of course the ones playing a lot have more chances to drop the score (due to elo and probability of loss). So what about normalizing it? Still X games played to enter the tournament and then the Y best scores considered. Then the average of those Y best scores. So it is not much a matter of playing exactly 150 games good, but to be good most of the time. Like 150 games considered to be good, while the rest could be "meh". Of course the games to consider should not be a little since one may have a lucky burst (it happened several times).

Do you have further ideas?

Ideas for unavoidable tournaments would be like: reward who plays and who is producing a good performance. Not only who keeps an high score with little matches, for that there is already the leaderboard as reward.

Tournament Category: Map Specialist

  • Sub-Categories: The Seven Wonders, Set Your Priorities, etc.
  • Rules: Anyone who gets N matches on Map against valid contestants is a valid contestant.
  • Winner-Categories: Highest Number of Valid Matches, Highest Win Ratio, Highest Elo Earned on Map, etc.

Sorry for the name spelling!

Could you elaborate the winner categories?

Highest win ratio is self explaining. Highest elo earned? In a game or cumulative? Highest number of valid matches would reward mostly who spams matches without quality, so it has to be worked out a bit better.

1) It's cool. I didn't mind. :)
2) Cumulative. In a game depends on who you're paired against so it's a matter of luck (and lots of randomization code). So in a game won't be a thing.
3) Spamming is risky. Personally, slowly releasing matches gives you greater chance of improvement.

Off-Topic: My Retreat System is compromised. Gotta fix that. Till then I'll drop down, and then start spamming.

4) Other categories that could be added are highest winning streak, highest losing streak (not joking. totally serious.), HWS, HLS against lower elo players, and HWS, HLS against higher elo players.

Ok I will consider some of yout hints (in particular the win ratio, elo earned, winning streaks. Losing streak, I don't get it, it has to be a tournament to show some sort of quality. Maybe shortest losing streak? But there will be the trivial "1" every time.

Just for fun. I meant longest. The one who wins must be very dedicated to the Tournament and really, who doesn't hate their ELO? ;)

I was thinking about the longest streak given "X games played in the period of time". Actually it may be more significant, to identify a player that is quite good, to have the average streaks of wins. Then again the average streak of wins results in good scores so it would be captured by the average score tournament that is already working.

Updated the first post. Kheops enters as another player being in the top3 of all the tournaments at least once.

Of course, if you spot errors, tell me!

the tournaments today got an entire subsection!

I'm not sure if it is to avoid spam, or as reward.

In any case, I find it great.

Updated the hall of fame.

Now Ritter is at the top for wins and for top3 places in all the tournaments.

Wozza enters the hall of fame, both for wins and top3 places.

I still have to update the hall of fame, anyway service announcement.

Likely between the mid of June until the mid of August I would have difficulties to compute the results of the unavoidable tournaments.

So I'll try to recover those editions later.

Hi Pier,

what would you think about giving some points for each tournament, and this way have a tournament winner each week ?

Like, for each tournament, give 5pts to the 1st, 3 to the 2nd, 1 for the top 20...

I am not sure if I follow, could you make a mockup example?

Like having a tournament of tournaments where a player, to win, has to collect points in all of them?

I do not know if I got your idea, but if yes, nice idea!

I can do it for this week and maybe someone else can calculate stuff retroactively since all the tournaments results are on the forum.

This is exactly what I mean :)

We could also create a more "graphic" way to present the winners, like a podium or something. This way the tournaments could be more attractive :p

But first we need to know how many points for each rank.

I can help you calculate previous tournaments if you need.
