Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

The prediction of mcompany in the chat (telegram) was right. Ritter spammed a lot of games (see the 140 direct fights and 54 of them valid) collecting a lot of points (see 142.5 points collected out of a maximum of 162). The surprise is jbdb here. Jbdb is a veteran of alpha 5.x, unfortunately not active on the forum, but he always floated in the top 20-30 except some moments in top10. Since he activated his account on the pc, though, his abilities grew a lot. I guess because developing on the pc is more comfortable. This is an hint for developing tools, those have to be comfortable!

Pikey did not spam so much as the previous tournaments (one can see he has only 36 valid direct fights while others have 40 an more), while wozza did not spam either.

Aside from that, impressive activity by mrchris, getting 77 valid matches out of 152 "started" encounters.

Mcompany said that he will be able to win a tournament when he will be less busy. But what is interesting is that there are moments in which a certain activity is enough. In this week both ritter and mcompany played 700+ games and that activity should be way enough to win the tournament, the problem is when one is "unlucky" and is matched against players that are out of the tournament (so, less than 1550 points and less than 400 games), or one does not win enough of the encounters.

More info, as usual, in the direct fights link.

Updated the first post, Ritter is the first player to win 3 tournaments. Then pikey and t800 follows with 2.

Also for the next tournament (this week), the cutoff will be 1600+ points, no limit on the games, who has 1600+ points gets included.

Ritter and Wozza fighting closely for the first spot. Some other players were quite active as well (the ones with 25+ total games, that can be converted in valid games when one plays enough). Surely the distance between the first and the rest of the group is less intimidating than the previous tournament.

More info, as usual, in the direct fights link.

So I did some changes.

1. I updated the first post with the new generic rules.
2. After having done the average score tournament, I realized I could use a similar version to collect the players eligible for the direct fights tournament.
3. So for the current tournament, whoever played at least 70 games with an average score of 1500 (this should prune a lot of "recent 1500+ players that I may have considered with manual selection" in the considered period is eligible. After that direct fights are computed

Gievn that, the following is the computation:

AS requested by mcompany I added a rough estimation of the final score (I will do better later, with a proper formula) and I converted the theoretical max score, that was not so clear, in efficiency.

Impressive the activity of mrchris, that up to yesterday (the data is not complete yet), spammed enough with a not so low efficiency, to collect a lot of points so far.

Then comes ritter and then a packed group of followers with 60+ points.

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

What I repeated a lot of time and what mcompany observed is well explained with the efficiency in this case. If a player has an efficiency not on par with the best players, the solution is spamming more matches hoping to collect points somehow. Of course it gets harder and harder when the efficiency gets lower.

Actually, then, the tournaments won by pikey were not so easy to win as I expected due to the great activity of pikey and, in this case, confirmed by mrchirs!

I'm impressed by my 66 points with just ~250 games in the week, I thought I would have had way less.

Congratulations to mrchris!

mrchris (evilgenius on the forum) is determined to win also this tournament, but it has to keep with the same pace without that the others explode later.

Although tortuga, kheops, mcompany do not seem willing to let it go.

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

I post mostly due to the impressive behavior of pikey yesterday and to see how this affects the tournament so far. mrchris and pikey battling from the first place. The estimations, as expected, lowered the possible final scores, except for pikey.

Then there is a group following made by mcompany, kheops, tortuga and wozza but if they do not spam matches the estimation says that it would not be enough. Remember that matches can be reverted. So if someone has a 3-0 against an opponent, winning him in the last part of the week enough times reverts the score. Although it is very difficult.

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

The activity in those days is impressive (first pikey started to improve, then mrchirs, kanishka and lubeno) therefore I think it is ok to push updates every day. Compared to other tournaments that saw way less activity. It is also amazing that given that the game mechanics are not changing since, now, 2 months, so 60 days, still people continue to find optimizations that take down even the top players from time to time. I wonder how many are still out there! Awesome game. It feels more and more like chess, at least in terms of possibilities, same rules, gazillion of possible tactics and improvements. EVen playing a little I'm really happy for the thriving community in the grand master league, I wonder if those tournaments helps too or not.

Also impressive how mrchris is aligned with the estimation. He is collecting 30 points every day, even if it is obvious that he should run out of "incomplete games" sooner or later.

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

Unless miracles are made, it is unlikely that pikey will lose this. There are 3 days left but, for example, mrchris used a lot of possible games, so the amount of points to collect is shrinking. Indeed he was not able to collect his usual 30 points per day.

Other players with higher efficiency may have a chance (mcompany, ritter, kheops) but they have to spam constantly to get valid matches.

If it continues in this way, pikey would equal ritter in wins of the direct fights tournaments. Note, also, that we had some surprises in the past so everything may still happen. Pikey made 70 points in one day in this week, for example.

Still in this tournament the activity is great. I also thought about normalizing the points against a player, so playing would be still important but not so much against the same player. The problem is that in this way it would be easier to exploit the scores playing at proper times. So for the moment I keep the current computations until I get some better idea that rewards playing as well as "Y is better than player X in the overall direct fights". if you have ideas, those are welcomed.

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

Yesterday also kheops joined the telegram chat, we need wozza and pikey!

The activity in grand master is awesome, also the "matches activity" diagram confirms that there were few moments with such activity in the league.

Only two day left. The amount of games that can be converted in valid for mrchris and pikey is shrinking and they are not so distant from ritter and mcompany. (remember 1 valid game is 3 points in the best case, so a distance of 30 is 10 valid games).

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

Surprising amount of activity for this tournament. Surely the new threshold of 1500 avg score and 70 games played in the last week helps to consider more players, and active ones! (this is the advantage of automated checking of the conditions)
Nevertheless it is also true that a lot of players are playing quite a bit, this can be also seen by the matches activity of the grand master league.

So, pikey keeps collecting points without stopping, so, while the remaining "not yet valid" games were shrinking, he was able to capitalize at least 10 of them.

Kheops boomed, almost reaching chris. A bit less did ritter and mcompany. Tortuga, Lubeno, Wozza boomed too. Wozza dropped for the first time the 100% efficiency.

I would say that for this last day the only ones that can take down pikey are Kheops and Ritter, but they should play almost no stop to get 15 more valid games (so 45 points).

Impressive, both ritter and Kheops overtook mrchris, but it was not enough for pikey that thanks to a better efficiency coupled with many games, kept enough distance from the second.

A very active tournament with many players over 100 points.

Pikey wins his 3rd tournament like ritter. He is someone to not underestimate!

Re: Unavoidable tournaments!

The grand master league is showing a nice activity, so partial scores!

I also changed the "best of" requirement to lower the amount of games that one has to play against the other to get a valid match (that sometimes is difficult due to timezones, maps and pairings). Now it is best of 2. Sure, the ones that play a lot will still have an advantage, but quality is needed.

(players not having any direct fights with 2 encounters are not listed)
